leaving town

This work stems from thoughts and ideas of displacement, possessions and practicality. Looking at my collection of 'useful' things, and understanding the reasons for collecting are not only aesthetic but also practical. Then the additional need to 'up sticks' and move on, come together in ways to find solutions, binding for transit. For me there is sadness and dignity here. How to hold onto dignity and possessions when faced with the loss of home and land. A world in a bundle. What becomes important and precious.

There was a conscious decision to place things in corners. The corner is a source of protection, two walls create both shelter and support, the piece is automatically supported, just by leaning in, without any additional help

The string, in both cases, is the holding force that binds, connects and compresses, capable of both strength and softness.

Reusing and rethinking of materials is at the core of my practice and here hessian, brown paper, string, packing material and foil balloons have all been utilised.
