Wet clay or sculptor's wax are the malliable materials used here. This is a tactile process of exploration. The clay is formed into textures, using varying the pressure of the hand. Every detail will be seen in reverse when a plaster cast is made. Valleys will become hills and visa versa. The wax is the kind used in figurative sculpture. A black wax that becomes more malleable when warmed. This is where the initial idea was born, during a hot summers day when the wax had become highly flexible, I spent some time stretching it then compressing it. It took on an almost skin like texture with deep, sharp valleys that would become the high points. Its not until the plaster is poured, removed and cleaned up that the new surface can be revealed. all 12cm diameter
