sandscapes. series 2020
12x23cm
This set of pictures was created in 2020 during the first lockdown.
The pictures are painted onto medium grade sandpaper, the kind found in a hardware store on a very long roll. Its 12cm wide and I tore off 23cm lengths. I use dilute emulsion paint, inks and waxes and a variety of techniques. The process involves spraying and pouring with unpredictable and uncertain outcomes as the paint runs through the sand. I work on several at a time, always keeping a reduced palette which give the sense of a family of pictures. The original colour of the sandpaper is an oxblood red, from this oranges and dark blues build up a background on which graphite and wax are built up to create depth.
The process of making these during lockdown was a perfect way to escape for a few hours. Because of the lack of control in the process, a landscape would appear or disappear into the mist and new horizons seemed possible.
